Since our founding in 1984, Smith has stayed committed to doing what’s best for our customers, our employees, and the communities where we live and work. One commitment that benefits everyone is sustainability.
We are proud to share that we are advancing our global sustainability efforts in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN SDG initiative began in 2015, with all 193 member states of the United Nations formally adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as an overarching guide toward building a better planet, now and in the future. Built upon decades of work from people and governments around the world, the resolution outlines seventeen overarching goals for countries, companies, and all stakeholders to commit to for the greater global good.
Smith’s approach to sustainability is reflected in five key SDGs:
These goals represent areas where Smith can make the greatest impact within our organization and across the global supply chains we support. By further aligning with these five goals, we can continue our efforts in helping the electronic-component industry become a more sustainable and circular ecosystem.
The UN SDG 3 focuses on ensuring that everyone in the world can live healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all people across all age groups, which aligns with Smith’s conscious and dedicated approach to prioritizing our people’s wellbeing. Its thirteen targets include efforts to reduce disease, ensure universal access to healthcare and health coverage, and reduce the environmental factors that significantly impact people’s health.
At Smith, we create safe, supportive, and healthy work environments throughout our worldwide locations, with a focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, and provide comprehensive health coverage for full-time employees, including preventive and mental-health services. As we continue to align our practices around the SDGs, our benefits and wellness programs will also continue to evolve to support our global workforce.
SDG 5 sets the goal of achieving true gender equality and empowering women and girls around the world. It aims to end gender discrimination and violence against women, ensure women have equal opportunities for leadership roles, and promote reforms to grant women access to economic resources.
At Smith, we are committed to building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone has the opportunity to lead and succeed. As the company continues to grow in new ways, we are actively increasing the representation of women across our leadership teams, providing tailored development opportunities for all, and ensuring equitable career advancements.
Smith has taken a proactive and dedicated approach to harnessing clean and affordable energy, in alignment with the UN’s seventh sustainability goal. This initiative aims to ensure affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all people around the world, helping to improve the world’s overall standard of living. SDG 7’s key targets include substantially increasing the share of renewable energy around the world, doubling the rate of improvement of energy efficiency by 2030, and empowering international cooperation in clean-energy research and technology.
Smith regularly conducts thorough energy audits across our facilities, resulting in upgraded LED lighting, more efficient HVAC systems, and renewable-energy solutions as utility contracts expire. We have also implemented energy tracking and data collection as part of our broader sustainability strategy and continue to explore partnerships to reduce emissions across our global operations.
This goal focuses on promoting long-term and sustainable economic growth for countries and people around the world, with an emphasis on creating productive and decent employment for all. It aims to help the world achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification and technological innovation, promote policies that support job creation and business growth, and assure equal pay for equal work.
Smith’s employees have built a foundation of excellence that makes us the leader in our field. They are the culture and identity of Smith and help shape our achievements and direction each day. We continually support our employees’ career goals and foster long-term career development by investing in robust employee training and talent-development programs. Beyond our internal practices, Smith ensures our suppliers and partners are equally committed through our responsible sourcing and labor standards.
Efficiency has always been at the core of how Smith serves the electronics industry, and we remain committed to managing the world’s natural resources in an efficient and sustainable manner. Alongside Smith, those who align with this goal ensure sustainable consumption and production practices within their spheres, significantly reduce waste, and adopt sustainable procurement processes.
We have put practices into place to support circularity and responsible resource management. Smith reuses and recycles as much packaging and waste as possible across our global locations and increasingly sources materials with recycled content. We partner with R2v3-certified recyclers for end-of-life disposal of electronics and work with customers to extend the lives of their products through refurbishment, remarketing, and component harvesting. Our inventory-management practices support waste reduction, optimized product flow across the supply chain, and proactive obsolescence management.
Smith’s alignment with the UN SDGs is part of a broader effort to ground our sustainability strategy in recognized global frameworks. As we expand our ESG data infrastructure and enhance engagement across departments and regions, we are also strengthening our reporting commitments.
In addition to our annual sustainability disclosures through the CDP Corporate Questionnaire and EcoVadis assessments, we are working toward publishing an annual sustainability report that will transparently communicate our progress and align with recognized standards and frameworks, including the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and other relevant taxonomies.
Our customers rely on us not only for reliable electronic components but also for reliable sustainability performance. We’re committed to growing in ways that support our shared goals across the electronics industry.
