Smith’s European headquarters take next step to optimize sustainable operations
Houston, TX (July 1, 2020) – Smith, a global distributor of electronic components and semiconductors, has earned the WEEELABEX (WEEE Label of Excellence) Certification of Conformity at its distribution center in Amsterdam. This certification recognizes Smith’s commitment to minimizing and responsibly handling e-waste in the company’s European operations warehouse.
The regulations outlined by WEEELABEX stem from the Dutch government’s interpretation of Directive 2012/19/EU, which sets a target for collecting, recovering, and recycling electrical waste and minimizing the volume of items that end up in landfills. The WEEE Label of Excellence is awarded to companies in the EU that have validated, audited, and standardized manuals and detailed reporting specifications of their recycling procedures. The combination of materials and components included in the WEEE category can be hazardous if not properly managed and can cause environmental and health problems. The requirements set out by WEEE help compliant organizations play a part in countering this risk.
“Environmental responsibility is more than just a corporate best practice to Smith – it’s been a core value we’ve prioritized for years,” said Kirk Wehby, Smith’s Chief Operating Officer. “Earning WEEELABEX certification at our Amsterdam operations warehouse affirms our commitment to reducing waste production and ensuring proper disposition of components to safeguard the supply chain and our global partners.”
