Smith is committed to protecting the environment through our procedures and practices, and we have adopted an environmental policy to identify materials that meet international environmental standards. But, as with everything at Smith, we aren’t content to just meet expectations. We strive to exceed industry and regulatory requirements when it comes to our commitment to sustainability.

Smith Sustainability Group
Originally launched in 2011, this diverse, interdepartmental committee helps guide Smith’s sustainability initiatives, driving the efforts behind our commitment to protecting, nurturing, and strengthening our global communities. From the green renovation of our Houston headquarters to the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of our leading-edge sustainable practices and solutions, the Smith Sustainability Group lights our path forward to a brighter tomorrow.
Certifications and Affiliations
Smith’s sustainability efforts are backed by numerous third-party certifications, accreditations, and memberships, and we continue to look for new ways to create positive impacts on the environment.
Circular Drive Initiative
As a member of the Circular Drive Initiative, Smith supports the secure and sustainable reuse of storage hardware to help reduce e-waste in the electronics supply chain.
Open Compute Project
Smith is committed to promoting efficiency and sustainability within the technology sector through collaboration and innovation.
Reverse Logistics Association
As a Gold member of RLA, Smith follows best practices for reverse logistics and circular-economy principles to help create a more sustainable supply chain.
IAITAM
Our IAITAM membership supports Smith’s involvement in the full IT asset-management lifecycle and enhances the efficiency, ROI, and risk avoidance achieved by following industry best practices.
Packaging
With billions of products shipped worldwide each year, our packaging offers Smith further opportunities to minimize our environmental impact. We commit to reusing materials whenever possible and use 10% fully recycled materials in our packaging. We streamline and minimize unnecessary packing material while maintaining the highest standards for ESD compliance and product protection.
Remarketing
Smith has remarketed more than 2.5 million HDDs and SSDs since 2023, helping to combat global e-waste and build a robust circular economy within the electronics supply chain.
Rooftop Solar Panels
Smith has approximately 134kW-AC installed on the roof of our Houston headquarters.
Bifacial Solar Modules
Our bifacial modules produce sustainable, efficient, and low-cost energy, while also providing ample shade for our electric-vehicle charging stations.
Electric-Vehicle Charging Stations
Employees and guests can sustainably recharge their electric vehicles at Smith’s twelve onsite stations.
Solar Thermal Water Heating System
Our solar thermal water heating system helps to reduce our total energy consumption.
LED Interior Lighting
Smith’s LED interior lighting is motion activated to help ensure we are conserving power whenever possible.
