The books will be distributed to local schools and literacy organizations around Houston
Houston, TX (November 1, 2021) – Smith, a global distributor of electronic components and semiconductors, today announces its donation of 1,000 copies of Newman the Human to local literacy nonprofits and schools in the Houston area. The children’s book was created by members of Smith’s marketing department and published in August of this year. Newman the Human was written by Andrea Meyer, Smith’s Internal Communications Manager. Mayra Viney, Multimedia Designer at Smith, illustrated the book. Rachel Goodell, Smith’s Marketing Content Writer, contributed as editor.
“I wrote Newman the Human shortly after my older child was born, but it wasn’t until a few years later, when I approached Mayra and Rachel about contributing their talents, that Newman finally came to life,” said Andrea. “It has been a fun process teaming up with these fellow working moms to make something our kids and children around the galaxy would enjoy.”
Newman the Human tells the story of a boy named Newman, who roams the galaxy in search of friendship. After meeting an alien named Blorg, Newman helps Blorg’s friends learn to embrace the differences in others and within themselves.
“Illustrating Newman the Human has been an exciting opportunity to collaborate with my coworkers,” said Mayra. “I am grateful to work for a company that not only celebrates its employees’ hobbies but also draws upon those interests to serve others in our communities.”
The books will be donated to Houston-area children through nonprofit organizations, such as Books Between Kids, as well as to local schools. Books Between Kids provides books to at-risk children in Houston to help build their home libraries.
“We are over the moon knowing that so many children will soon have a copy of Newman the Human in their own libraries,” said Andrea. “Childhood literacy is fundamental to numerous areas of life – from language skills and understanding the world to imagination and creativity, not to mention the simple joy it brings. Mayra, Rachel, and I are grateful to Smith for the incredible support we have received and for their generous donation to young readers around Houston.”
