Smith has long been a supporter of blood donation, hosting a semiannual drive at our Houston headquarters for the past several years. This year, however, we expanded our blood drive beyond our headquarters’ city limits by hosting a virtual blood drive that allowed both onsite and remote employees across the United States to select a time and donation location that was convenient for them.
COVID-19 has impacted nearly every aspect of life, including our global blood supply. This year, Smith employees pledged to donate enough blood to help save more than 60 lives and help alleviate this growing problem.
“As part of our World of Good campaign, we have been actively seeking projects where our employees around the world can all participate,” said Rachel Goodell, Smith’s Content Marketing Specialist, who helped organize the virtual event. “Our virtual blood drive gave us the opportunity to impact communities across the United States, and I look forward to seeing even more large-scale events in the future.”
A favorite CSR event among employees, Smith plans to hold another blood drive later this summer.
Smith’s corporate social responsibility program is now known as CHIPS, which stands for Community Helpers Inspiring Progress through Service.
“While still under the CSR umbrella, we feel the new name better encompasses what we do,” said Patti Everitt, Smith’s Director of Human Resources and head of our CHIPS committee. “Smith has always encouraged employees to make positive impacts in their communities, big and small. We love when an employee has seen something on the news or knows of something going on in their communities and comes to us with an idea for how to help the people affected. Then when one of our locations hosts an event, employees from other Smith cities start thinking of ways to help people in their backyards. It’s wonderful how positivity begets positivity.”
