In mid-October, there was an explosion and subsequent fire at Intel’s FAB28, one of the company’s Israeli facilities, caused by refined gas that was being transferred between containers. Tragically, two people died from injuries due to the incident, and a third person sustained serious injuries.
The facility, located near the city of Kiryat Gat, was shut down for two weeks for cleanup and repair before its anticipated reopening on November 1. In its earnings call last week, Intel said that, beyond the two deaths, the accident will cost the company about USD $600 million as a result of the cleanup process, production loss, and the loss of wafers stored at the time of the explosion.
The Kiryat Gat fab produces Intel 7 products, which is currently Intel’s most consistent and competitive die node. Shortages were already occurring within this die node before the accident because of the popularity of the CPU families made with it, and more are likely to come.

The decline in production should not be a significant amount compared to Intel’s global map for those products. Nevertheless, more than two weeks of downtime plus the loss of existing wafers could lead to temporarily longer lead times and shortages for those parts. It is possible that Intel may be able to mitigate the losses and extended lead times to some extent with slightly elevated utilization rates or product mixtures from other facilities, but that has yet to be seen.
It takes two to three weeks for a Xeon CPU to be completed from this stage of the process, putting deliveries meant for December through January at risk.
We will continue to monitor the situation and share the latest updates as they become available.
