Recently, Smith earned the #8 spot on the Houston Business Journal’s Healthiest Employer list for small and medium employers. The rankings were based on a 75-question survey created by Springbuk. Employers were rated in six categories – foundational components, strategic planning, programming and interventions, communications and marketing, culture and leadership commitment, and reporting and analytics – to determine their rank on the Healthiest Employer Index.
“Smith’s commitment to employee wellness is part of what makes our company one of the best places to work,” said Patti Everitt, Smith’s HR and Recruiting Manager. “This recognition will facilitate our ongoing efforts to recruit top talent to our organization.”
In addition to a top-tier healthcare benefits package, employees at Smith’s corporate headquarters – located in Houston, TX – enjoy a 6,700-square-foot fitness facility on site, complete with full locker rooms, towel service, and daily group exercise classes, such as bootcamp and Pilates. Employees stop in early in the morning until late at night to lift weights, run on the treadmills, or ride the Peloton stationary bikes. Smith also holds annual weight-loss challenges, with nearly 50 percent participation rates among employees worldwide.
“Smith has strived to increase participation in our wellness program by creating a fun and fulfilling environment for our employees, culminating in our state-of-the-art fitness center,” said Art Figueroa, Vice President of Operations and Quality, NA & EU. “Our employees are empowered to create meaningful changes in their lives that ultimately lead to a more productive workforce.”
Senior Account Executive Parker Deardorff is one such employee. Parker struggled to develop a consistent gym routine prior to signing up for Smith’s first weight-loss competition, but this contest motivated him to find a routine he could maintain. He started attending group exercise classes regularly and working with the personal trainers during his lunch hour, instead of eating high-calorie meals at nearby restaurants. Ultimately, the new routine paid off – he was named one of the challenge winners and has stuck to his fitness schedule ever since.
“I feel better, I eat better, and, best of all, I’m able to do my job better,” Parker said. “Sales can be mentally and emotionally demanding some days, but I love having my gym time to relax and clear my head.”
